the unusual tale of mary + joseph's baby
The Unusual Tale of Mary + Joseph's Baby is a modern retelling of the traditional nativity story. There is arguing, love, dreams, and problem-solving. It is set in a vague time, inspired by images of the American dustbowl. The location is kept traditional, with events transpiring in Nazareth and Bethlehem. The muted colors of the set allow the audience to feel and see the emotion of the characters displayed in lighting throughout the show.
Above are images from the concept presentation, building on ideas of layering, texture, and interaction. The set was built on a small budget, and had to be able to travel from Knoxville, TN to Oklahoma City, OK for a short run in both cities. The set also had to accommodate both spaces, a challenge that was successfully met. The Knoxville space was found space, in an unused warehouse building. while in Oklahoma City, the show was performed in a small theater.
